Dining out has always been
one of my favorite pastimes. One of the first mistakes that I made when
I was diagnosed with T2D was that my days of dining out were behind me.
With the new dietary guidelines set by my CDE, I was sure I would have
to say goodbye to dining outside the home.
Three words apply- I was
wrong!
A qualifier is in order. I
am not a dietician, nor am I rating dining establishments based on the
quality of food. I am simply a diabetic, who, by trial and error,
has found that living with diabetes allows me a occasional night out for
dinner. I now research my dining options online and ask my servers for
nutritional information. I share my experiences below.
This section of my site will
be growing as time passes. I also welcome input and suggestions as well!

There is a surprising void on the 99 corporate website. Though
the menu is clearly posted, there is no nutritional information
on the site. An email sent to the 99 Corporate Offices was
answered within a few business days. A PDF copy of the menu was
sent with the email. (View
99 menu here). When I stopped by my local 99 in
Salem, NH, I asked if they had any nutritional information
onsite. I was told that they did not have the ability to provide
any nutritional information to patrons. |

It may sound odd to give a fast-food restaurant a 5 star
"diabetic friendly" rating, but McDonalds does what
all others should do. Online nutritional information is just a
couple of clicks into the McDonalds website. It's both easy to
find as well as easy to decipher. The onsite nutritional
information is stamped on the back of most every menu. McDonalds
is trending toward more healthy choices. Be sure to watch the
calorie and carbohydrate count on dressings as they can have
more calories that the entire salad. Healthy options are available! |

TGI Fridays has perhaps the most frustrating website I have
navigated. On several locations, they reference the fact
that nutritional information is posted on the Menu page of the
site. Funny thing- when you get to the Menu page, there is
NO nutritional info. They've taken web-based incompetence to the
next level. The contact page has a small blurb for
FAQ's. The top question is, "Where do I find
nutritional information?". This leads back to.... you
guessed it... the Menu page with no nutritional information. I ordered
the Strawberry Fields with Chicken salad. The food was
good, service was good, pricing was good, but I am still unable
to determine calories for dinner. Many restaurants sell salads
under the pretense of healthy food, when in fact, they are
loaded with fat and calories. More info to follow.
I've sent an email to their
Guest Services folks and we'll see how they respond to my inquiry.

Still no reply or acknowledgment from TGI Fridays of my request.
I resubmitted the request again tonight, with a politer note
that no one replied to my first request.
"Hi TGI
Fridays,
I submitted a request online on May 7, 2007 for nutritional information. Though your website says nutritional information is
available on the Menu section, there is no information provided. As a diabetic, information like this is necessary for those of us in the diabetic
community; As I requested in my earlier submission, even if nutritional
information is not available online, if any documentation could be provided, I would be most appreciative. My
information request of several weeks ago still remains unanswered.
I am also the webmaster for a diabetes resources website. With online information of value to members of the
diabetic community, you can review our restaurant guide/ratings at: http://living-with-diabetes.org/restaurant_guide.htm.
The courtesy of a reply would be appreciated.

Two words--- ABYSMAL FAILURE. The Cracker Barrel website open
touts that it does not offer any nutritional information.
And I quote, "we
are unable to give you any exact calorie or fat content
information." On a recent visit to the Derry
NH location, I politely asked the hostess if nutritional
information was available on-site. I had already checked the
website and found no nutritional information. The bubblegum
snapping hostess told me to "ask my server." She was
plainly not interested in offering any help. The server, though
polite was clear that information was not made available. She
was kind enough to point out a couple of low carb options, but
was unable to provide any nutritional information. To
their credit, there were a couple of "diabetic
friendly" choices and I settled for a well-prepared soup
and salad.

Here is yet another classic case of corporate insensitivity.
Longhorn has no nutritional information onsite. In addition, the
"official' website has the following comment:
"Nutritional information on
specific products is not currently available. It is a key part
of the LongHorn experience that we try to accommodate requests
for specific food item preparation in order to meet your needs.
Please let your server know if you have a specific dietary
request and we will make every effort possible to fulfill your
request." Read

This is a classic case of
corporate doublespeak intended to evade nutritional information
postings. C'mon, folks.... It
is a key part of the LongHorn experience that we try to
accommodate requests for specific food item preparation...Oh,
does this make me feel better or what? Thank goodness they don't
post nutritional information. I would miss out of a key
part of the Longhorn experience. I did send a website request
for ant additional information they could provide. Let's hope
the do better than our 2007 Hall of Shame nominee TGIF's! |
